Câu chẻ hay còn gọi là Cleft Sentences là câu được sử dụng với chức năng nhấn mạnh vào một thành phần nhất định trong câu như tân ngữ, trạng từ hay chủ ngữ. Đó cũng có thể là một sự việc, đối tượng đáng chú ý trong câu. Câu chẻ cũng là một dạng câu ghép bao gồm mệnh đề chính và mệnh đề phụ kết hợp với các đại từ quan hệ. Ví dụ It was my brother who got the highest score last month. Chủ ngữ my brother được nhấn mạnh ở, người nói muốn nhấn mạnh vào thông tin rằng người thực hiện hành động “got highest score” là “my brother” chứ không phải bất kỳ ai khác. 2. Cách dùng câu chẻ trong tiếng Anh Dùng câu chẻ với It Bắt đầu bằng It là cấu trúc câu chẻ phổ biến nhất. Thông tin sau đó dùng để nhấn mạnh cho người nghe. That nối hai mệnh đề với nhau, sau that chứa thông tin cũ đã được hiểu trước đó. Cấu trúc dùng câu chẻ với WH Câu wh-cleft có thể bắt đầu với what nhưng cũng có thể sử dụng How, Where, Why,..Thông tin trong mệnh đề WH thường là thông tin cũ, được giới thiệu trước đó. Thông tin muốn nhấn mạnh là thông tin trong mệnh đề sau. 3. Cấu trúc câu chẻ trong tiếng Anh Câu chẻ nhấn mạnh vào chủ ngữ subject focus Khi chủ ngữ nhấn mạnh là người, có thể sử dụng who = that It is / It was + chủ ngữ nhấn mạnh + who/that + phần thông tin còn lại của câu. Khi chủ ngữ nhấn mạnh là vật hay sự việc chỉ sử dụng that It is / It was + chủ ngữ nhấn mạnh + that + phần thông tin còn lại của câu. Ví dụ VD1 Scientists all over the world have taken action to disable corona virus. ⇒ It is scientists all over the world that/ who have taken action to disable coronavirus. VD2 Chinese has become the second language of some countries. ⇒ It is Chinese that has become the second language of some countries. VD3 Iris' absence at the party made me sad. ⇒ It was Iris' absence at the party that made me sad. Câu chẻ nhấn mạnh vào động từ object focus Khi động từ nhấn mạnh là người, vật hay sự việc chỉ sử dụng that It is / It was + động từ nhấn mạnh + tha + phần thông tin còn lại của câu. Ví dụ VD1 Volunteers in my country often help the aged with housework in a poverty area. ⇒ It is aged people that volunteers in my country often help with housework in poverty areas. VD2 Scientists in Russia have just successfully invented a vaccine for COVID-19. ⇒ It is a vaccine for COVID-19 that scientists in Russia have just successfully invented. Câu chẻ nhấn mạnh vào tân ngữ adverbial focus It is / It was + tân ngữ nhấn mạnh + that + phần thông tin còn lại của câu. Ví dụ VD1 Volunteers in my country often help the aged with housework in a poverty area. ⇒ It is in poverty areas that volunteers in my country often help the aged with housework. CHÚ Ý Cũng cùng là câu “Volunteers in my countries often help the aged with housework in poverty area.” nhưng với ví dụ này chú trọng đến thông tin in poverty area - tân ngữ nhấn mạnh. Ex Jane lives in a small house. ➔ It is a small house that Jane lives in. Câu chẻ với What Là câu mà thông tin nhấn mạnh sẽ thường được đặt ở cuối. Mệnh đề “what” được đặt ở đầu câu có thể sử dụng các từ khách thay what như why, where, how. Mệnh đề What + V + câu/ từ được dùng để nhấn mạnh VD What they like to eat for lunch is always Banh Mi. CHÚ Ý Cũng cùng là câu “Volunteers in my country often help the aged with housework in poverty area.”, nhưng nhấn mạnh thông tin the aged / nhấn mạnh tân ngữ dưới dạng bị động. 4. Các cấu trúc câu chẻ nâng cao khác Câu chẻ với “wh” đảo ngược Chủ ngữ + động từ + what + Ý cần nhấn mạnh Ví dụ True love is what everybody wants to have. Câu chẻ nhấn mạnh với “all” All + Chủ ngữ+ Động từ + Ý cần nhấn mạnh Ví dụ All I want for this special day is a free day.
